In brief
  • The name “Propyl poppers” does not guarantee the chemical inside the bottle.
  • Isopropyl nitrite is the alkyl nitrite most often found in UK seizures.
  • Its effects are a brief rush, warmth and dizziness, and they usually last a few minutes.
  • Never use poppers with sildenafil, tadalafil or vardenafil: blood pressure can fall dangerously.
  • Alkyl nitrites are not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, but their legal position is uncertain, so check before you buy.

Many people buy a small bottle labelled propyl poppers without knowing what is inside. The name tells you very little, so it is hard to know what you are breathing in.

This article explains what these products are, what they do to your body, what the risks are, and whether they are legal to buy in the UK.

What is in a bottle labelled propyl poppers?

“Propyl poppers” is a trade name, not the name of a chemical. Sellers use it for a bottle of liquid.

The liquid is an alkyl nitrite, a family of related chemicals. In UK seizures and forensic samples from 2018 to June 2023, isopropyl nitrite was found most often: 91 of 121 detections. So isopropyl nitrite is the one to expect.

Don’t rely on the name alone

A bottle labelled propyl, amyl or pentyl does not tell you exactly what chemical is inside. Sellers use these names for different formulas, and the labels vary in wording and in bottle size, such as 10 ml or 24 ml.

Some bottles say “not for inhalation” and mention another use, such as a room deodoriser or leather cleaner. Check the label, but do not assume it confirms the contents.

How you feel after using them, and for how long

Inhaling alkyl nitrites gives a brief rush or euphoria, warmth, dizziness and stronger arousal. These effects usually last a few minutes, so plan for a short effect.

The 30-second start and the 3 to 5 minute duration come from amyl nitrite. For propyl products, they are only a rough guide, not a measured time for each one.

Your reaction depends on your body and can differ from one use to the next, but these are the common effects:

  • Heat and flushing: the blood vessels widen, so your face and chest may feel hot and turn red.
  • Headache and dizziness: lower blood pressure can make you feel unsteady, and some people faint.
  • A fast heartbeat: your heart beats quicker as your body reacts to the drop in pressure.
  • Milder effects such as nausea, sweating, chills, throat irritation and tiredness.

Propyl, amyl or pentyl: what the evidence says

Propyl, amyl and pentyl are not three strengths of one chemical. They are different alkyl nitrites. Amyl and pentyl can also name related five-carbon forms, so the name alone does not tell you what is inside.

Sellers call amyl strong, pentyl balanced and propyl fast or smooth. These words give no reliable ranking of strength or duration. Do not choose a bottle based on them.

Propyl, amyl and pentyl are different chemicals, and seller wording cannot rank them.

Point Propyl Amyl Pentyl
Seller description Fast or intense, or smooth Strong Balanced
Duration estimate A few minutes, group estimate 3–5 minutes, amyl only A few minutes, group estimate
Human effect data Limited Limited Limited
Mixed products Some blends include it Some blends include it Some blends include it, so check the ingredient list

Health risks and medicine interactions

Never use poppers with sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) or vardenafil (Levitra). These medicines and poppers both widen blood vessels. Taken together, they can cause a severe fall in blood pressure.

If you take one of these medicines, do not use poppers at all, even a small amount.

Other risks have a first step to take:

  • Severe methaemoglobinaemia, where the blood cannot carry enough oxygen, can cause seizures, coma or collapse. Call 999 at once if someone collapses or has a seizure.
  • Poppers maculopathy can blur or reduce central vision. Stop using poppers and book an eye check soon.
  • Alkyl nitrites are highly flammable. Keep them away from flames, cigarettes and lighters.

Alkyl nitrites are not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. That does not make sale automatically legal.

The Psychoactive Substances Act 2016 makes it an offence to supply a psychoactive substance for its effects, unless an exemption applies. A sale for its psychoactive effects can therefore fall under it. For alkyl nitrites, the legal position is uncertain.

A recommendation is not a law

The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs has recommended adding alkyl nitrites to the list of exempt substances. That recommendation does not change the law, so do not assume an exemption applies when you buy. The Council knows of no prosecutions under the 2016 Act relating to alkyl nitrites. It also recommended that sales to under-16s not be allowed, but that advice sets no legal age limit.

Where to buy them in the UK, and what you will pay

Prices and offers change often, so the figure you read may not be the one you pay. Each seller also sets its own free-delivery threshold, so check it before you add anything to your basket.

Your bank statement may not show the product name. Before you order, check the payment terms with the seller so you know what will appear on it.

Here is what each seller charges in pounds sterling for the two sizes:

  • Le Jus Super Propyl: £4.76 for 10 ml and £5.95 for 24 ml.
  • Le Jus Super Propyle: £7.70 for 10 ml and £9.40 for 24 ml.
  • Another UK listing for Propyl: £9.40 for 24 ml.

Using them more safely, and when to get help

Never swallow or inject the liquid. Keep it off your skin, and keep it away from flames, sparks, lighters and heaters.

Taken with these medicines, poppers can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure.

Propyl, amyl and pentyl are different alkyl nitrites, and sellers use the names loosely.

Ask first, even if you have used poppers before.

Plan for a short effect and keep the bottle closed between uses.

Alkyl nitrites are not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, but their legal status is uncertain.

The product name may not appear, so check the payment terms with the seller first.

Severe methaemoglobinaemia can cause seizures, coma or collapse.

If you take medicine for erectile dysfunction, or any medicine that affects your blood vessels or blood pressure, ask a doctor or pharmacist before you use alkyl nitrites. Do this first, even if you have used them before.

Get help fast if any of these happens:

  • Someone has lost consciousness or has severe difficulty breathing: call 999.
  • Someone has swallowed or touched a harmful substance: call 999. Do not make them vomit or give them food or drink.
  • You are unsure whether an exposure is harmful: call 111, which is open 24 hours a day.
  • Questions about the drug: call FRANK on 0300 123 6600, or ask a doctor or pharmacist.

Propyl poppers are alkyl nitrites, and the bottle name does not say what is inside. The effects are brief, but the risk with erectile dysfunction medicines is serious. Their legal status in the UK is uncertain.

Before you buy or use one, ask a doctor or pharmacist about your medicines. Then check the legal position before you order.

FAQ

Will poppers show up in a drug test?

Don’t assume a test will catch poppers, and don’t assume it will rule them out.

Alkyl nitrites are volatile liquids you inhale, so a test cannot be relied on for them. If a test is due, tell the person running it what you have used.

How should I store propyl poppers at home?

Keep the bottle closed and out of reach of children. Store it well away from flames, cigarettes, lighters and other heat sources, such as a radiator or a heater.

Check that the cap is firmly on after each use, so the bottle stays shut between uses.

Will the name on my bank statement show what I bought?

Your bank statement may not show the product name. Before you order, please check the payment terms with the seller, so you know what will appear on it.
